How Does Satellite Radio Technology Work

The field of engineering combined with masterminds in technology and aerodynamics over a span of several years brought us satellite radio. And those minds are continuously working today to develop, redefine and improve on the signals received from space today. Way more advanced and more complicated than it seems, thankfully all you have to do is push a button, point and click and you have the station or program you-re waiting to hear. And its coming from radio signals transmitted from space. It-s the ‘Jetson- s Age’ in the 21st century.

Satellite radio works by using radio signals beamed from space. The signals must be strong enough to reach all channels necessary. The two major players providing these satellites and the financial backing are Sirius and XM.

Both Sirius and XM have geostationary satellites thousands of miles above the earth beaming signals back to the planet. These satellites are considered geostationary satellites. By geostationary, we mean the satellites are engineered to rotate the earth at the same speed the earth is rotating. So in essence these satellites seeming do not move.

The signals sent from the satellites are received by grounded units placed strategically so they are free of obstruction or obstacles such as buildings or human interference that would allow intrusion. Sirius and XM have storage facilities which are capable of storing a very large number of programmed songs and other features from radio networks across the country. Their capacity handles somewhere in the range of 25,000 gigabytes which is comparable to 1 terabyte.

These satellites are capable of picking up programming transmitted from around the globe. So the user can listen to or get information and programming from a large number of channels.

Users can simply click on a station and the system is engineered to beam the material down from the satellite. The signals are constantly being transmitted so if there is no obstruction and the satellite remains on course with earth as programmed, all the user has to do is turn on their radio, select a channel and push play. When there are no problems, users receive clear uninterrupted music, sports, weather, chats, news or spiritual programming. Most users can obtain up to sixty channels on their radio.
